Going to church

We had Mirelle's baptism last Sunday. We had invited almost 30 people, family, relatives and the Godparents (4 of them) where friends of ours. We had it in Gerby Parish House which is only 2 kilometers away. It worked out well and I think everyone liked the event.

Now to some thing that doesn't happen that often, we visited church today on a regular church service. The Finnish Lutheran church has largely become a ceremonial institution for weddings and funerals in a somewhat secular society. A bit sad but cultural change is an ongoing process that can move back and forth but that's the way things are right now. The thing about our visit is that the priest read out the names of the new members of the parish meaning the children that have become baptized during the week.

  1. One of the sweetest things is when the kids start going to Sunday School and loving it more than anything else in the week: the stories, the colouring, the little cookies for snack. And the best best BEST....when your Mirelle is in the Christmas pageant at church. Nothing is sweeter!!!!

  2. I remember going to Sunday School as a kid but I actually had to check what the church here offers and it's Sunday School, soma sort of daycare a couple of times per week, parents-children groups and a children's music group. I don't remember being part of a Christmas pageant and things haven't unfortunately changed the last 25 years. There's still no Christmas pageant but the usually have that in the Christmas party (you can call it that?) at the end of the semester before the holidays in kindergarten and/or elementary school. Each class or group usually have a Christmas pageant (one of them, not all), a few plays and some quire singing. I remember parent's being very exited about that =).
